A 5-member Delegation from Australian Cotton Shippers Association comprising ACSA Chair and CEO visited CAI Headquarters yesterday and met all CAI Board of Directors. Thereafter, a Seminar on Australian Cotton was held and a Brief Presentation was made by Mr. Cliff White, ACSA Chair. The resentation was followed by one-hour Question-Answer session. Indian farmers, ginners, brokers and delegates present in the Seminar asked several questions concerning Australian cotton and opportunities for Indian cotton and textile sector. A lively and interesting discussion ensued. The information provided during the Q and A session is given below for the information of the members:-
1) Australian Cotton production is around 50 lakh bales.
2) Australia has only 1500 cotton growing farmers.
3) The average landholding of each farmer in Australia is 577 hectares.
4) The Australian Cotton yield is 2400 kgs. per hectare.
5) The outturn of Australian kapas is 42 to 44%.
6) Cotton seed is much smaller.
7) Seeds are distributed to the farmers by the Government.
8) Only one Company seed is given to farmers.
9) Farmers don’t sell kapas.
The Farmers send kapas to ginning factories and get their kapas ginned. They pay ginning pressing charges to factory-owners and then, sell cotton lint to merchants and cotton seed to oil mills or hold for their own use.
10) Cotton cake is mainly used for cattle farm and also exported to China.
11) In Australia, cotton is grown mainly in Queensland.
12) Average length of Australian cotton is 29 mm and mic. is 4 to 4.9 Cotton is available in Length from 28.5 to 31 mm.
13) If they grow higher length and low mic. cotton yields are very low.
